Reading ML papers is not enough. Once you read the paper, you need to go to the Github repository shared in the paper. You need to clone it and try replicating the results on your own.

This is tremendously useful. It not only develops coding skills, but allows you to play with parameters on your own. This sets up the stage for you working on something new based on the paper you just replicated.

That can eventually lead to a research publication.
